The World Comes to Whitehaven

The small, coastal community of Whitehaven, Cumbria played host to one of the most exclusive and stylish cruise ships at sea on the weekend of 14th & 15th August 2010.

The World is the only cruise ship designed as a private, sea-faring community... passengers pay between £320,000 and £13,000,000 for a suite and live onboard for much of the year; passengers and captain also choose the itinerary, ports of call and shore excursion options. Best described as a 'floating town' the 43,500 tonne ship has 165 luxurious cabins and is undertaking a tour of the British Isles, with ports of call already visited including Cardiff, Dublin, Cork, Doulgas and Whitehaven before journeying onwards to Liverpool (16 to 19 August), Greenock (20 to 23 August) and Oban (23 to 25 August).

Special events were laid on in the town of Whitehaven, including a Carnival, a 'Made in Cumbria' Seafront Market and international Food Fair on the renovated harbour area. Last year, Barrow-in-Furness, home of Cumbria Cruises was visited by Tahitian Princess, a sure sign of the growing attraction of the English Lake District to cruise passengers from all over the world.

Ian Stephens, Chief Executive of Cumbria Tourism said: "This is without a doubt the world's most prestegious ship. It's also a very highly visible result of all the work being done by ourselves and our partners to put Cumbria on the map in the cruise world. We really hope business will benefit as a result.

"If we can attract this calibre of ship to our shores and impress them while they're here, it can help spread the word about why Cumbria is a must-visit port-of-call for cruise ships visiting UK waters"

Unfortunately, you can't book The World with Cumbria Cruises, but as part of this wonderful county, we are always proud to see it visited and appreciated by cruisers and tourists from all over the world.
