The Rhone is again one of the major rivers of Europe, running through Switzerland and France.
Initially the Rhone was an important inland trade and transportation route, connecting the cities of Arles, Avignon, Valence, Vienne and Lyon to the Mediterranean ports of Marseille and Sète. The Rhone’s beauty is was captured in 1888 when Vincent van Gogh painted Starry Night Over the Rhone.
